Tarot Card Temperance representing Sagittarious

SAGITTARIUS

November 23 – December 21

TEMPERANCE

The Daughter of the Reconcilers, the Bringer Forth of Life”

Happy Birthday Sagittarius! Did you know that Jupiter is your Ruling Planet, Sagittarius? It is the largest planet in the solar system and the 5th planet out from the Sun. It is also the oldest of all of our planets, so it makes sense that you, my charming Sagittarius, come off as being wiser than your years.  Jupiter is what gives Sagittarius its sense of expansion, exploration, wisdom, practicality and leadership.

Back in the Day, January of 1610 to be more precise, Jupiter was believed to be surrounded by four moons; Io, Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, known as the Galilean satellites after Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei who discovered them. Galileo first observed and noted these moons’ courses and their occurrences and made the mistake of sharing his findings publicly. Why was that so bad?  Galileo’s observations gave birth to the Copernican theory, in that planets did not revolve around Earth, as believed by the Catholic Church, but a central Sun. During this era, that notion was considered to be Heresy. Why? Because the church had preached that Man and Earth were the center of the universe and all things traveled around it. Poor Galileo, a true scientist and man of conviction, suffered for such a belief as he was convicted of heresy.  300 years later and a lifetime of house arrest for Galileo, the Catholic Church finally agreed with Galileo in that planets do travel around a central Sun rather than Earth and man as being the center of the Universe.  Jupiter, in its calm peaceful, going about its business way was at the center of new knowledge, expansion of human understanding and created a pathway for new learning. Also, we NOW know that Jupiter has 79 moons. How about that?  You can now understand how Sagittarius came to be affiliated with expansion, new ideas, risk taking, adventure, conviction, seeing the big picture and being wisest of the signs.

The Temperance card of the Tarot deck is a Major Arcana card and as a Major Arcana card was believed to be affiliated with Gods. They are so very powerful in a Tarot Reading that they supersede Minor Arcana cards in setting the tone and energy of a reading.  If you look closely, you will note that the Temperance card depicts the holder of two cups who is constant motion pouring one cup into another in an effort to keep both cups full, all things in balance and providing for all. With one foot in the water and one foot on land, Temperance is fully grounded and in touch with their emotions and the practical or the Earthly side of life. Her red wings are full of passion and fire as they are expanded and always at the ready to take in life or take flight. Behind her there is a gilded crown shimmering in the distant sky with a similar glow about Sagittarius’s head, giving the observer a sense that Temperance is but a Red-Winged Angel on loan to us as a way to inspire us to bring balance into our lives.  Angelic in appearance and with the yellow irises in bloom and greenness of her lands, it is here that we discover her link to the Queen of Pentacles or Queen of Earth. Pentacles in the Tarot represent the practical, the grounded, the picture of abundance, fertility, healing and prosperity. She works calmly and methodically to keep all in balance and growing.

In the Toth Tarot, Sagittarius is coined The Daughter of the Reconcilers, the Bringer Forth of Life”

Whether you are a Sagittarius or you know one, you probably see them (or yourself) as a person who brings about balance, creativity, fruitfulness, ideas and practical application. The high energy sign of Sagittarius with its charismatic personality can be irresistible and magnetic. Sags enjoy the attention but also like to maintain a steady pace; moving through life by keeping calm and level headed in even the most stressful situations. Let’s take a closer look at the characteristics of a Sagittarius.Queen of Pentacles also carries Sagittarius Energy
People born under the Sagittarius sun are loyal, smart, assertive, passionate, creative and compassionate. They are linked to humanity and all Earthly things and will sometimes appear as the Queen of Pentacles, fully-grounded, abundant, producer of fertility and self confident, as she sits elevated over her lands which she has grown over time and hard work and planning,  but not taking her focus off of her coin. This sign and this card, the Queen of Pentacles, look at the big picture in each situation and can easily understand multiple perspectives without losing her own. The Queen of Pentacles represents the loyal, true, focused, prolific and practical side of Sagittarius.

Where else can you look for Sagittarius in the Tarot?  With wings to take flight and swift action, Sagittarius is present in the House of Wands. Sags are represented in the fair, charismatic, wise and romantic, family focused King of Wands, the charging Knight of Wands, hard working, load bearing Ten of Wands, the battle worn Nine of Wands and the fast moving Eight of Wands rushing in with messages and action. Sagittarius do not parry from risk. Tarot Cards Representing Sagittarious in the Minor Arcana are various members of the Wands.

The friends you have who parachute out of planes, hike Mount Rainier or open up their own businesses may have Sagittarius energy in their chart. They have sharp business and sports-competitive mentalities combined with a sense of fairness and justice. The Ace of Wands represents great passion and new creative beginnings.  No matter what your sign or card, it is truly a gift from the Universe to see the Ace of Wands in your reading infusing your life with passion, creativity and the promise of abundance. These all can be interpreted as cards reflecting Sagittarius.

With so many great strengths, weaknesses do prevail. Sags can be blunt. This could come in handy with their business-like attitude, but one must be careful not to let this characteristic go too far and hurt the feelings of friends, colleagues and family members.

Celebrities

Anyone who is familiar with the sports world, most importantly the tennis world knows the legend Billie Jean King. She was born on November 22, 1943 which makes her a Sagittarius. Her birthplace is Long Beach, California and now she is 78 years old. She is a former No. 1 tennis player in the world, and she won 39 Grand Slam titles. She founded the Women’s Tennis Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation, and also became the owner of the World Tennis Team. Your Number

Each card in Tarot is associated with a certain number.  Temperance, which is the card of Sagittarius, is the 14th card in the tarot deck. The number 14 represents this Major Arcana card as well as its reduced form of five. But what do these numbers mean? The number 14 indicates a karmic situation where people must learn independence, unity and justice. 14 encourages creativity and adventure, but also sends warning that there might be some trouble along the way. At the stage five it is time to take stock, assess the competition and develop a plan for improvement. The vibration of the number five indicates that many changes are ahead and hopefully of your own making. In Tarot we consider these opportunities for growth and expansion.  It is our challenges that make us who we are, yes and our successes are those rewards of learning. But the challenge is what teaches us best.
